Setpoint Systems’ lean automation will increase productivity, accuracy and quality for military ammunition manufacturer ATK
Ogden, Utah, December, 2010 –Setpoint Systems (www.setpointusa.com), a leader in lean automation and assembly automation was recently awarded the contract for the 7.62mm Back End Case Cells for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, operated by ATK Small Caliber Systems.
The contract calls for Setpoint Systems to build seven 7.62mm back end case manufacturing systems to evaluate and support the manufacturing of 160 million bullet cases per year. The 7.62mm x 51 round is the ammunition military special operations forces typically use in M40A1 and M40A3 rifles for the Marine Corps; M24SWS and M110SASS rifles for the Army and the M24SWS rifle for the Air Force for accuracy at long distances.
Setpoint Systems has already built and delivered the prototype cell, which is in the final stages of validation. The company is in the process of building the next seven cells and plans to have them delivered and operational by August of 2011.
As part of this contract, Setpoint Systems has incorporated its lean automation procedures to create a system that will continuously test the casing materials for defects before moving on to the next step. If it detects a defect, it automatically rejects them and the system provides a detailed analysis of the defect and corrects itself before manufacturing additional casings.
“It’s standard operating procedure to incorporate lean automation practices into everything we do, which provides our customers with increased productivity, accuracy and quality,” said Clark Carlile, vice president of sales and marketing at Setpoint Systems. “The automation we’ve developed for this project is truly unique in the industry, and we’re confident that it will set the standard for similar projects from now on.”
ATK’s Armament Systems group is the world’s largest manufacturer of military ammunition and medium-caliber gun systems. It operates the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Mo., which produces 1.4 billion rounds of small-caliber ammunition per year.
